Solihull Moors boss says 'we're going to need some players in' as club sits bottom of National League

Solihull Moors manager Chris Millington admits the club is still trying to mould the culture of his squad as a difficult start to the season leaves them bottom of the National League.

The Moors have lost their opening three league games of the 2026/27 campaign, with Saturday's 3-1 defeat to Southend United leaving them without a point.

It follows defeats against Harrogate Town and Boston United, while Solihull have also lost to Middlesbrough Under-21s in the National League Cup.

The four defeats have left Millington with plenty to think about as he attempts to turn around the club's fortunes.

And the Moors boss has admitted there could be further changes to his squad.

Speaking after the National League Cup defeat to Middlesbrough, Millington said: "We're going to need some players in, we're still in a period where we're trying to mould the culture of the group."

He also acknowledged that there could be difficult decisions to make while the squad is being reshaped.

"There might be a little bit of pain in terms of having to move some lads on in that period whilst also trying to bring lads in," Millington added.

Millington was angry after Boston defeat

The manager's frustration had already been clear following the 2-0 home defeat against Boston United.

Millington described himself as "really quite angry" after the result and admitted that Boston deserved their victory.

He felt his side had improved with the ball compared with their opening-day defeat at Harrogate, but the result left the Moors with back-to-back league defeats.

The situation has since become even more difficult.

Southend arrived at Damson Park with two wins from their opening two league matches and continued that perfect record by coming from behind to beat Solihull 3-1.

The Moors had the opportunity to take the lead from the penalty spot early in the match, but Jacob Wakeling saw his effort saved. Southend subsequently recovered and eventually took all three points.

Solihull have now conceded 10 goals in their first three National League matches, scoring just three.

New defender arrives

Millington has already made a move to strengthen his squad.

Craig Farquhar has joined Solihull on loan from Barnet until September 18, with the 23-year-old centre-back making his debut against Southend.

The Northern Ireland Under-21 international previously spent time at Crystal Palace and has Champions League qualifying experience from his time with Larne.

His arrival could prove particularly important for a Solihull side that has struggled defensively during the opening weeks of the season.

Scunthorpe up next

There is little time for the Moors to dwell on their poor start.

Their next match is against Scunthorpe United on Friday, August 28, with kick-off at 7.45pm at the Attis Arena.

Scunthorpe will provide another difficult test, with the club having reached the National League play-offs last season.

Solihull then have another league game just three days later when AFC Fylde visit Damson Park on Monday, August 31, with kick-off at 3pm.

What about the cup?

The Moors are already competing in the National League Cup, which features National League clubs against Premier League 2 opposition.

They lost their opening group match 3-1 to Middlesbrough Under-21s and will next face Leeds United Under-21s at Damson Park on Tuesday, September 8.

The club also has the FA Cup and FA Trophy to come later in the campaign.

For now, though, Millington's immediate priority is clear.

After four defeats in their opening four competitive matches, the Moors need to find a way to turn performances into results.

And with the manager admitting that he is still trying to mould the squad, there could be more changes at Damson Park before the season settles down.
